Permanent Death
This is really a pseudo-perma-death server. To us, that means death can happen and yes it is permanent, but there are many ways to cheat death in this world. Hopefully, players should find that if they die, they really deserved it.
Bleeding to Death
Upon losing all hit points a character will fall to the ground incapacitated, drop their belongings and begin bleeding to death. At this point, all NPCs stop attacking and the character is given an 80% chance to stop bleeding to death.
Characters that make the save will stop bleeding to death and they will roll again every 3 to 6 minutes to wake up with 1 HP.
Characters that fail the save will actually bleed to death and die after about 10 rounds if they are not healed with a spell, potion or healing kit. Healing kits, potions and spells have been specially designed to be usable on other players for this purpose.
In the case of an extreme fight with massive damages, there is no chance to bleed to death. For example, a level 30 Giant slices through a level 2 PC doing 120 HP of damage. In this case, the PC will just die with no save or chance to bleed to death.
Healing Kits
Healing kits can be used by those that have points in the Heal skill on people who are in the bleeding state. Characters that are bleeding to death have failed their save and will die after about 10 rounds. Healing kits can be used to stop the bleeding even after the char has failed a save to stop bleeding on their own.
Raising the Dead
Characters that do die drop all of their belongings on the ground and are transported to the Death Plane leaving behind a corpse item. A high level Cleric can use the Raise Dead spell on the corpse item to bring that character back from the Death Plane.
Clerics should role play this appropriately, they should take a -5 to Con for several days after each rez. Much thanks and praise should be given to God and the newly raised character should find themselves drawn to that God for the rest of their lives.
This puts a great deal of emphasis on the Cleric as a class and makes them very valuable.
DM Raising
DMs can easily raise a character by simply jumping the character out of the Death Plane. There should be no strange side-effects related to doing this and the DM does not need to use the Raise Dead spell on the corpse. DM's may be much more willing to raise someone like this if things are role-played in a reasonably entertaining fashion.
There are plenty of people that could accidentally find the body and drag it back to a priest, so be nice, patient, creative and social with others on the server and characters will be given another chance.
Starting a New Character
It is important for DMs to lead by example here and I think that we do a good job of this. We really want people to be able to start a new character and explore new terrain in new ways. We do not want players to get so attached to their character that they get upset by losing them. This is a game and we are here to have fun. No matter what happens on this server, it is all totally un-productive in real life. Meaning that none of this will ever get you paid in any way nor will anyone else get paid for their hard work here. So everything that we do on this server is really a total loss in real life.
If you become really upset about losing a character and cannot find the strength to create another, then perhaps you should take a break, visit with your family and learn to enjoy life while you have it... because you are taking this game far too seriously.
Perma-Death is a RUSH!
The reason that we like Perma-Death here is because it gives us a rush. As your char is about to die, your heart will be pumping and you may even be sweating in real life. This is a fantastic effect that we thrive on here. It is amazing that a simple video game can bring about those types feelings and we want to capitalize on that because not many games can do that anymore. The Dawn of Time actually creates fear and people do get scared playing. This leads to even more mystery and challenge.
Many servers out there will simply re-spawn characters back at a home location after losing a battle to the death. This just does not make much sense to us. We would rather put in a very lenient Bleeding System as mentioned above to get a more realistic effect. We also like being able to capitalize on the powers of the Cleric.
Good role-playing opportunities are created through this kind of conflict, without conflict there is no drama.
We think that if you give the Perma-Death Server a chance, you will find that it creates a far better experience for mature, role-playing adults.
